On Nov. 21, Glenbard East beat the Raiders 41-28 in a game where they fell behind early and could never recover. The Raiders trailed 9-0 to start, but Callie Hardtke nailed a three to cut the lead to six with 3:44 left in the first quarter. They found themselves down 16-6 in the second quarter, and while the Rams were looking to extend the lead, center Molly Purse used her height advantage and came in with a block near the basket. Down 19-7 with 2:30 left in the second quarter, Jamie Mizwicki hit a corner three to make it a nine point game.
With 4:10 left in the third quarter, Kate Bruhl sank a three to cut the lead to 23-15. With 30 left in the third quarter, Mizwicki hit another three to make it a 30-20 game. Then as time was expiring, Brooke Buenafe made a three of her own to cut the lead to seven going into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Hardtke showed off her defensive skills with three steals, and one led to a three point play when she was fouled on a layup. However, the Rams were able to hang on for the 13 point victory.
Hardtke led the team with nine points and five steals.
Glenbard East had advantages across the board including rebounds 51-23, assists 12-6 and blocks 2-1. Glenbard South’s defense did well holding them to 27% and 22% from three, but their own offense sputtered shooting 18% from the floor and 18% from three. They also only had 40% of their free throws made. The Raiders led in steals 7-5.
“We've had a rough start to the season,” said Coach Eric Daca. “Allie Mizwicki, our senior captain and all-conference player the past two years, has not played yet this year due to an ankle injury. Sofia Alcala, also a senior captain, left the Glenbard West game with a deep thigh contusion, and has missed the last two games. As we are working to get back to full strength, we are ready for the start of conference play on Tuesday vs. Larkin.”
